Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts down to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
